The stuff I wrote in high school got me labelled as the “next columbine” kid. It got phone calls home that nearly tore apart my home life and shoved me in front of accusatory counsellors who wanted to believe nothing I said. I feel like I’m reading more and darker YA fiction now as a “grown up” because it works as some kind of retroactive solace for that had to be hidden back then. Thanks for this quote, Holly.
